Dan Dalquist serves as Board Chair of the Keweenaw Health Foundation, bringing thoughtful leadership, financial expertise, and a deep connection to the Copper Country community. In his role, Dan helps guide the Foundation’s strategic direction, ensuring responsible stewardship of philanthropic resources and alignment with its mission to establish a healthier quality of life for the people it serves. Dan is a retired Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, where he built a successful career helping individuals and families make sound, strategic financial decisions. His background in financial planning and long-term investment strategy provides valuable insight to the Foundation’s governance and funding priorities. In addition to his professional experience, Dan is a dedicated ski instructor at Mont Ripley Ski Area, where he shares his passion for skiing with students of all ages and skill levels. His enthusiasm for outdoor activity reflects his belief in promoting active, healthy lifestyles within the community. Dan is a graduate of Michigan Technological University, where he developed a strong foundation in business and problem-solving. His diverse background, commitment to mentorship, and passion for community engagement make him an invaluable leader for the Keweenaw Health Foundation.

 

Ed Jenich

BOARD VICE CHAIR
Retired Executive Director

Ed Jenich serves as Vice President of the Keweenaw Health Foundation, bringing decades of leadership and service to the organization and the broader Copper Country community. Prior to stepping into the Vice President role, Ed served for ten years as Executive Director of the Foundation, where he led transformative initiatives that significantly strengthened local health programs and community partnerships. A long-time fixture in the region, Ed has dedicated much of his career to improving the health and well-being of residents throughout the Keweenaw. He currently serves as Board Chair of the Houghton County Department of Health and Human Services, where he is the only gubernatorial appointee on the county’s panel. His reappointment reflects the trust and confidence placed in his leadership at the state and local levels. Throughout his tenure with the Foundation, Ed championed initiatives that expanded access to care, strengthened community collaboration, and enhanced the impact of charitable giving across the region. Even after transitioning from the Executive Director position in April 2024, he continues his dedicated service, offering strategic guidance and institutional knowledge that help advance the Foundation’s mission to establish a healthier quality of life for the people it serves. Ed’s longstanding commitment to public health and community leadership remains a cornerstone of the Keweenaw Health Foundation’s continued growth and impact.

 

Darryl Pierce

BOARD TRUSTEE
Retired Superintendent and Advancement Officer

Darryl Pierce serves as a Board Trustee of the Keweenaw Health Foundation, bringing decades of leadership experience and a lifelong commitment to strengthening the Copper Country community. As a retired Superintendent and Advancement Officer for the Calumet, Laurium & Keweenaw school districts, Darryl dedicated his career to shaping opportunities for students and families throughout the region. During his tenure in educational leadership, Darryl focused on fostering academic excellence while advancing strategic initiatives that expanded resources and opportunities for students. He worked closely with educators, families, and community partners to ensure schools remained responsive to the evolving needs of the communities they serve. His efforts strengthened collaboration, promoted innovation, and supported long-term growth across the district. Beyond his administrative leadership, Darryl is widely respected for his dedication to community engagement and service. His experience in strategic planning, relationship-building, and organizational advancement provides valuable insight to the Foundation’s governance and mission-driven work. As a member of the Keweenaw Health Foundation Board, Darryl continues to contribute his expertise, leadership, and passion for community well-being, helping guide initiatives that support a healthier quality of life for the people of the region.

 

Ian Lewis, J.D., MPA

BOARD TRUSTEE
Laurium Village Manager

Ian Lewis serves as a Board Trustee of the Keweenaw Health Foundation while also serving as Village Manager for Laurium. In his role as Village Manager, Ian oversees a broad range of municipal operations and serves as the community’s chief financial and administrative officer. He works closely with the Village Clerk and Treasurer, as well as the Police, Fire, and Public Works departments, to ensure efficient and transparent operations that meet the needs of Laurium residents. His leadership emphasizes fiscal responsibility, collaboration, and strategic planning to support long-term community development. Ian holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Public Administration from Northern Michigan University and earned his Juris Doctor from Michigan State University College of Law in May 2022. His combined background in law and public administration equips him with the expertise to navigate complex municipal issues and provide effective governance. As a member of the Keweenaw Health Foundation Board, Ian brings strong analytical skills, policy knowledge, and a commitment to public service. His dedication to collaboration and community well-being supports the Foundation’s mission to establish a healthier quality of life for the people it serves.

 

Jonathan Brueggeman, DPM, MHSA

BOARD TRUSTEE
Foot and Ankle Surgeon & Regional Medical Director, Aspirus Health

Dr. Jonathan Brueggeman serves as a Board Trustee of the Keweenaw Health Foundation and is an experienced Foot and Ankle Surgeon with Aspirus Health, where he has been part of the team since 2019. With over a decade of expertise in podiatric medicine, Dr. Brueggeman is dedicated to providing high-quality care to patients in the Copper Country and surrounding communities. He earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University and completed his podiatric surgical residency at St. Joseph Hospital of Chicago. Prior to joining Aspirus Keweenaw, Dr. Brueggeman served as a foot and ankle surgeon at Aspirus Riverview Clinic in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, and co-directed a wound care clinic in the Copper Country. He also collaborated with a wound care team at Aurora St. Luke’s Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Brueggeman is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Podiatric Medical Association, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and the Wisconsin Podiatric Medical Association. He is also an Associate of the American Professional Wound Care Association. In 2020, Dr. Brueggeman was named Regional Medical Director for Aspirus in the Upper Peninsula. He further advanced his leadership expertise by earning a Master of Science in Health Services Administration (MHSA) from University of Michigan in 2023. His combined clinical and administrative experience brings valuable insight to the Keweenaw Health Foundation, supporting its mission to enhance health and well-being across the community.

Joel Asiala

BOARD TRUSTEE
Superintendent Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) Public Schools

Joel Asiala serves as a Board Trustee of the Keweenaw Health Foundation and is the Superintendent of Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) Public Schools, where he leads the district’s efforts to drive academic success and maintain high educational standards. A lifelong educator, Joel began his career as a student at Jeffers High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies and Physical Education from Northern Michigan University, followed by a Master of Science in Special Education with an endorsement in Education Administration from the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MAASP). Before stepping into the role of superintendent, Joel held key leadership positions, including Principal of Horizons Alternative School and Washington Middle School, and served for 13 years as a special education teacher in the Lake Linden-Hubbell School District. He also coached both boys’ and girls’ basketball, supporting the personal and athletic development of his students. Joel is the Co-Founder of the Superior Educator Award with the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and was recognized as Alternative Principal of the Year by the state of Michigan in 2019. He is also the Co-Founder of Teach Link Educational Software Company, reflecting his commitment to advancing educational tools and resources. Through his extensive experience in education and community leadership, Joel brings strategic insight, dedication, and a deep commitment to the well-being of students and families, making him a valued member of the Keweenaw Health Foundation Board.

Katie Schlief

BOARD TRUSTEE
Manager - Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce

Katie Schlief serves as a Board Trustee of the Keweenaw Health Foundation and is the Manager of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, where she plays a key role in supporting local businesses, assisting visitors, and coordinating community events that strengthen the region’s economy and tourism. Originally from Minnesota, Katie moved to the Upper Peninsula eight years ago to pursue a family business opportunity. She brings over 18 years of experience in marketing, sales, fashion management, and event planning, giving her a unique perspective on community engagement and organizational leadership. Katie’s expertise in branding, purchasing, and sales, combined with her commitment to community involvement, makes her a valuable contributor to the Keweenaw Health Foundation. She enjoys all that the region has to offer throughout the seasons and is dedicated to giving back to the community that has welcomed her.

Mick Hagwell

BOARD TRUSTEE
Chief Financial Officer, Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center

Mick Hagwell serves as a Board Trustee of the Keweenaw Health Foundation and is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center, where he oversees financial operations and ensures the organization’s strategies align with its mission to provide high-quality healthcare. With extensive experience in healthcare finance, Mick plays a critical role in budgeting, financial planning, and managing resources to support UGL’s regional operations. Beyond his professional work, Mick has been deeply involved in the community through local youth hockey programs, serves on church boards, and contributes to initiatives that support families and children across the region. His commitment to community service, combined with his financial expertise, enhances the Foundation’s ability to make a meaningful impact. Mick’s leadership and engagement both professionally and personally reflect his dedication to improving the well-being of the Copper Country community, making him a valued member of the Keweenaw Health Foundation Board.

 

Jenn Jenich-Laplander

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Keweenaw Health Foundation

Jenn Jenich-Laplander serves as Executive Director of the Keweenaw Health Foundation, leading the organization with passion and dedication to advancing its mission of improving healthcare access, wellness, and community well-being across the Copper Country. Since assuming leadership of the Foundation in 2024, Jenn has focused on expanding the Foundation’s impact through strategic partnerships, innovative programming, and community-centered grant initiatives. Her commitment to community health is reflected in efforts supporting childcare access, veteran’s events, fitness resources, and family support programs. In addition to her role with the Foundation, Jenn serves as Communications and Engagement Coordinator for Aspirus Health in the Michigan Region, where she fosters strong relationships with community partners, enhances outreach efforts, and supports health promotion initiatives. With a background in healthcare advocacy, community engagement, and communications, she brings a collaborative and thoughtful approach to building programs that meet the diverse needs of the region. Jenn is also actively involved in local government as a member of the Village of Laurium Board of Trustees, where she contributes her expertise in community leadership and strategic planning to efforts that benefit residents and strengthen local services. Through her varied roles and deep roots in the community, Jenn remains committed to enhancing the quality of life in the Keweenaw by building partnerships, advocating for health and wellness, and creating opportunities for positive, lasting change.
